SolidariGlee Sings “Emera’s Profiteers”

Random singers from Solidari-Glee – (the “we lead songs, we don’t perform” group that is part of the Cultural program of the Halifax and Dartmouth District Labour Council) got together to work on a song about the Nova Scotia Power rate increases.

Emera is NS Power’s parent company.   The words were originally crafted by Waye Mason and amended by the members of SolidariGlee (the lyrics are printed in full below the video) – we encourage you to take up the song!  Power is for the people and should never have been privatized! And its time for it to come back home, Emera greed isnt working for Nova Scotians.

Since first being recorded and uploaded to YouTube, this video and the song have now been featured on a CTV News broadcast with host Steve Murphy, as well as CBC radio and television news broadcasts in Halifax.

Here are the words:

Emera’s Profiteers
Words by Waye Mason & Solidari-Glee,
based on the song Barrett’s Privateers by Stan Rogers.

Oh, the year was 1992, how I wish I’d known what I know now,
NS Power privatized by the Preem
Twas the scummiest plan I’d ever seen,

God damn them all!

We were told the plan would mean that costs’d drop
We’d get a deal – shed no tears!
Now we’re poor and broke on a Halifax pier
Still fighting Emera’s profiteers.

Oh, Donald Cameron, cried the town, how I wish I’d known what I know now!
For the largest public private sale
That trapped us in this tragic tale

God damn them all!

We were told the plan would mean that costs’d drop
We’d get a deal – shed no tears!
Now we’re poor and broke on a Halifax pier
Still fighting Emera’s profiteers.

Our power bills are a sickening sight, how I wish I’d known what I know now!
Monthly bills are the highest in the land
Greedy increases are out of hand.

God damn them all!

We were told the plan would mean that costs’d drop
We’d get a deal – shed no tears!
Now we’re poor and broke on a Halifax pier
Still fighting Emera’s profiteers.

The mills they closed, our bills went up, how I wish I’d known what I know now!
Corporate Pirates got their way
But we’ll rise again, we’ll have our day

God damn them all!

We were told the plan would mean that costs’d drop
We’d get a deal – shed no tears!
Now we’re poor and broke on a Halifax pier
Still fighting Emera’s profiteers.
